Tour Divide Race: Day 19, Basinger Injured in Crash With Vehicle
Alaskan Pete Basinger, who was Individual Time Trialing the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, was injured in a collision with a truck pulling a horse trailer yesterday. Details of his condition are not known, but Pete's friend and fellow Alaskan Jill Homer, the current female leader in Tour Divide, came upon the accident. You can listen to Jill's call-in here: mtbcast.com
Meanwhile, five riders have finished this year's race. Matthew Lee broke his existing Tour Divide record (not to be confused with his Canadian prologue/GDR record) with a time of 17 days, 23 hours and 37 minutes. This was Matthew's sixth consecutive year of racing the GDMBR. Colorado resident Kurt Refsnider finished second in 18:11:13. Jay and Tracey "T-Race" Petervary established a tandem-category record with a time of 18:13:44. Single speeder Chris Plesko trumped two existing records with his time of 19:00:16.
Keep checking back, as there are lots of good stories still out there on the Divide and I hope to have more details about Pete soon. --Jon Billman
