Running Ultras After Major Brain Surgery

Diane Van Deren is a world-class ultra-runner who happens to have a kiwi-sized portion of her brain missing. The 49-year-old had a lobectomy in 1997 to prevent recurring seizures, and she has dealt with her health problems by running habitually for long distances before the crack of dawn. She often takes a wrong turn along trails because she can't remember where she's supposed to go, but at least she can rely on her foot falls to keep her in the groove. Watch her in action above, and check out her story in The New York Times.
