Top 10 Adventure Twitters
From Everest, to the Arctic, to the middle of the ocean, adventurers are taking the time to tweet. Celebrities like Richard Branson, Anthony Bourdain, and Survivorman Les Stroud have even joined in.
In honor of our April Adventure Issue, we present the Top 10 Adventure Twitters. In 140 characters or less, all of these Twitters offer inspiration to get outside.
10)
Jimmy Chin just started on Twitter, and we want more. We gave him a little slack and put him at 10 since his time away from a computer is spent in remote parts of India and Borneo climbing big walls. Plus, even though he's climbing in far off places, he puts up some pretty inspiring video and pictures.
9)
gCaptain posts dispatches from around the world's oceans. From dolphins blocking pirates to the top green ship designs, the stories keep sailors up on the latest maritime news.
8)
Backcountry.com keeps readers up to date on new outdoor contests, adventure news, and what outdoor athletes need to blog a little more. They just called you out Julian Carr.
7)
REI posts on everything from the latest survival stories, to open jobs at local branches, to some of our best adventure articles. Nevermind the constant reminders on great deals, they also link to helpful ways to convince your friends to get outside.
6)
Our Literary All-Star Tim Zimmermann posts news on anything that's wet: from surfing, to sailing, to kayaking. He throws up multiple links a day. You can also read his longer features on his dedicated page.
5)
Kraig Becker, a.k.a., the owner of The Adventure Blog, supplements his longer in-depth expedition updates with useful tweets that link stories on travel, gear, and events. And yes, we put him at number five even though he makes a jedi reference in his Twitter name.
4)
To get outside and have fun, you need advice on gear. The Gear Junkie delivers with news on great deals, tips on repairing old gear, and reviews of the best new gear. He puts equipment through the wringer by going on his own adventures, which he writes about for The New York Times. You can also read his scoop column on our site.
3)
Roz Savage rowed across the Atlantic, and up next she's taking on the Pacific. She's crossing oceans, alone, in a row boat. And she still takes the time out to Tweet, about what she's eating, and all that trash in the middle of the ocean. If nothing else, its easier than the constant and upcoming stroke, stroke, stroke...
2)
Steph Davis gets points for putting her Twitter account up early. Her tweets, like her life, are packed with short, quick, bursts of originality from around the world. "Seriously, you climb the limestone walls and the walls are part of CASTLES! #slovakia #awesome." She posts fervishly on everything from what's in her iPod, "ishuffle reload:
platinum trance/dance, divinyls, mary j blige, mc solaar, mary mary,
tom petty, oakenfold live from creamfields, tranceport" to the challenges she faces basejumping, "pretty strange
wingsuit flight, pure white clouds from 8000 feet to 5500. had to use
homing pigeon navigation to get back to the airport."
1)
Alan Arnette keeps one of the most comprehensive and inspiring blogs on Everest. He conducts interviews, quotes experienced mountaineers, maps the routes, and keeps a spread sheet showing the advance of every team on the mountain. He uses his Twitter account to instantly refer followers to interesting stories from the mountain. He gets the top spot because his passionate coverage of the world's highest mountain is fueled by the highest of causes. He hopes that anyone who like his posts will contribute to a fund for Alzheimers research.

This is a really great top ten list, I follow a few of these adventure twiterers, they have some awesome tweets. Anyone can post their own list to our site http://www.toptentopten.com/. The coolest feature is you can let other people vote on the rankings of your list.

Nothin inspires people to explore their world better than hearing a story or seeing pics of an amazing destination. Thanks for the list.

Don't forget Ray Zahab. Super awesome dude - runner and fund-raiser. He is new to Twitter but should be included in this list. Not many people out there who can say they've run across the Sahara Desert.
