Where's The Adrenaline?
The Anchorage Daily News examines the state of adventure film festivals and outdoor-themed films, and ponders a shift away from heart-pounding extreme sports showcases toward more thoughtful, issue-based projects.
"Ten or more years ago we decided to diversify the content and really look at issues, with the idea that film could trigger conversation that leads to change," said Justin Clifton, director of the Telluride Mountainfilm Tour. "We call it the domino effect of Mountainfilm, inspiring the audience to action... Today, adrenaline and adventure films are in the minority."
Are these adventure film festivals right to seek out deeper, more provocative films that shy away from spectacular visuals? Or should they return to their thrill-seeking roots and save the social commentary for Sundance?

I used to be a regular at Mountainfilm for many years. Now it just bores me to tears and I can't bear to attend. The do-good, greenwashed, over-the-top PC stuff gets old when it's constantly thrown in your face. The Alpinist Film Fest was a refreshing return to adventure but is sadly no more.
