Video: Olympic Flame Reaches Everest Summit
After adverse weather delayed summit attempts for more than a week, the Chinese took an Olympic torch to Everest's summit. Tibetan female climber Ceran Wangmo carried the flame the final few meters, after which the Chinese team stopped to yell, "Beijing welcomes you."
The Everest climb was the most ambitious part of a torch relay that has resulted in numerous protests and riots. For the upcoming group of torch carriers and the Chinese security that surrounds them, the fun has just started. Next comes a trip through the provinces of Tibet and Xinjiang, where minority Tibetan and Muslim populations, repressed for years, will probably not be won over by China's proclamation of welcome. Even if it was shouted out from the top of the world.
