Myanmar Cyclone: How to Help
With death tolls expected to rise as high as 10,000, the Myanmar cyclone could be the biggest natural disaster Asia has seen since the tsunami of 2004. Cyclone Nargis smashed into the Irrawaddy Delta and the country's main city of Yangon early Saturday morning, ripping houses apart, flooding roads, and cutting off electricity. Half of Myanmar's 53 million people live in the disaster area, reports the New York Times.
Though Myanmar's military dictatorship keeps the country isolated, the government is allowing the United Nations to send emergency aid. Various aid organizations are arranging for food, clean water, and shelter for cyclone victims. If you want to help, Unicef, the Red Cross and Direct Relief International are all taking donations now.
