Back-to-Back Iditarods, and Then Some
Musher Lance Mackey won his second straight Iditarod when he crossed the finish line in Nome at 2:46 am this morning. During the 1150-mile race he braved temperatures of 40 below, frostbitten feet, and the loss of a lead dog.
In the past year Mackey has won two major sled dog races back-to-back, the Iditarod and the roughly 1,000-mile Yukon Quest. With his Iditarod victory, Mackey won $69,000 and a new Dodge Truck. He also left the rest of mushing community wondering whether they'll ever get a chance to win these two races.
